About me
Dr. Toby S. Jenkins serves as a Professor of Leadership & Inquiry at the University of South Carolina. Her latest book, “The Hip-Hop Mindset: Success Strategies for Educators & Other Professionals,” explores what counter cultures have to offer in terms of success mindsets and leadership strategies—what they can teach us about work ethic, commitment, authenticity, and resilience.
Prior to becoming a professor, Dr. Jenkins spent a decade as a student affairs administrator. She has worked at the University of Maryland, Penn State, George Mason, the University of Hawaii, the University of South Carolina, as well as Semester at Sea. She is currently a non-resident senior fellow at The Brookings Institution in Washington DC. Other roles that are particularly important to her are serving as a mom to a super active 12-year-old son and being a caring daughter, sister, and friend. She is a breast cancer survivor who is also living with lupus. Culture, in the form of art, poetry, music, storytelling, elder wisdom, and street knowledge feeds her soul.
